Tonight’s scheduled Brothers Cazimero Mother’s Day concert at Hilo’s Palace Theater was cancelled because of Roland Cazimero’s illness and hospitalization.

Tonight’s scheduled Brothers Cazimero Mother’s Day concert at Hilo’s Palace Theater was cancelled because of Roland Cazimero’s illness and hospitalization.

Meanwhile, in Waimea, Saturday night’s show at the Kahilu Theatre will go on, with a change. Robert Cazimero will perform with members of his Halau Na Kamalei.

“Many of our concert-goers wanted to see the Brothers Cazimero because of their harmonies, so we’re ending up issuing refunds and rescheduling them at a later date,” said Morgen Bahuinsky, the Palace’s operations director, Thursday. “They want to come and perform here. They’ve never performed at the Palace.”

Ticketholders are instructed to contact the Palace business office and tickets must be presented for refund. The business office is open weekdays 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Call 934-7010 for more information.

The Saturday show at Kahilu starts at 7 p.m. Robert Cazimero will bring members of his halau with him to play bass, sing and dance hula, while he plays piano and sings the Cazimero repertoire dating back to the Sunday Manoa days of the 1970s.

Tim Bostock, the Kahilu’s artistic and managing director, said Thursday the theater is suspending its usual refunds policy to allow refunds in advance of the show, for non-members and members, with a processing charge of $5 instead of the usual $10 fee.

Bostock said the show is close to a sell-out and all tickets are expected to sell prior to the concert.

“There are about nine left, I believe, and they’re all singles,” he said. “There are no seats left together.”

Bostock said a few refunds have been processed, but those tickets were snapped up quickly by others.

“It was a hard decision to make, but we talked to Robert and he said he’s got a wonderful bass player with a beautiful voice,” he said. “We feel we’ve made the right call.”

In addition to dancing hula, halau members often have backed Robert Cazimero and the Brothers Cazimero as a choral group.

Roland Cazimero became ill during a May 2 concert at Maui Arts &Cultural Center and was hospitalized at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Robert continued the performance after his brother was taken to the hospital, and was awarded a standing ovation.

Family said Roland Cazimero was diagnosed with walking pneumonia, had fluid removed from his lungs and was on a ventilator.

He remained hospitalized as of Thursday, a hospital official confirmed.
